The visitor, even if he had been much spoken about this famous gallery, cannot prevent himself from admiring the sight which is offered to its eyes when he leaves the hall. It was precisely what François 1er wished, when it made raise in 1528 this wing connecting the royal apartments to the Chapel of the Trinity : to dazzle the visitors from all Europe contemplating this jewel of the "First School of Fontainebleau". Indeed the decoration mixes harmoniously the skirtings, the stuccos and the frescos, in a new association, introduced by Italian artists such as Rosso (following of Michel Ange), and a little later, Primatice (painter at the court of Mantoue). We can notice:
- a skirting in woodworks carved, painted and raised gilded reasons. One notices there "F" of François 1st, his emblem (the Salamander) and the royal weapons (three flowers of lily). |
|
- Some stuccos : carved decorations made with plaster and powder of marble. |
To increase the image |
- frescos painted directly on the wall. Their comprehension
is rather difficult because the subjects are referred sometimes to mythology, sometimes with the virtues of the King, the events of his reign, or the traps which it must avoid. One will note for example the fresco of the Royal Elephant, symbol of Wisdom and Royalty and, at the opposite, that of the Unit of the State where
François 1st holds with the hand a grenade: the meeting of multiple grains
in only one fruit symbolizes the capacities concentrated in only one
hand.

The aspect of the Gallery was deeply modified under Louis XVI: a building doubling this wing sealed all the windows opening on the Garden of Diane.
