The apartment of Madam de Maintenon is located in a pavilion called Pavilion of the Golden Door. It is by this door that formerly was made the access to the Castle. François 1st had made rebuild this pavilion with the Italian style, i.e. with loggias open on outside. Here the loggia was glazed at the XVIIème century, to make the apartment more comfortable.
Madam de Maintenon, second wife of Louis XIV (it had secretly married her in 1683 after the death of his first wife Marie Thérèse of Austria) lived this apartment of 1686 to 1715. A part of the decoration carried out with its intention is still in place, in particular the woodworks of the large living room (which was its bedroom) and those of the study.
The furniture we can currently see in the various parts was placed here under Louis Philippe and Napoleon III.
