The ballroom

As for the François 1st gallery, the visitor cannot prevent himself from being dazzled (and why would do it ?) by the beauty of the room, due at the same time to its luminosity, its proportions (it measures 30m length on 10m broad), and its situation between the Oval court and the gardens. The visitor can measure the harmony of the unit, before detailing the frescos painted about 1550 by the team directed by Nicolo dell' Abbate according to drawings of Primatice. This room had been started under François 1st, but when died the king, the architect Philibert Delorme, charged by Henri II to continue the embellishment of the castle, chose a ceiling out of boxes, inspired by Italy. Besides the ballroom has for another name the "Gallery Henri II".

Salle de bal

The room was mainly used to give receptions, balls, banquets. Comedies were also represented there. A platform located at the top of the door welcomed musicians, while the king and the queen were held on a platform, in front of the chimney.

Very employed until Louis XIII, it has been forsaken since the middle of the XVIIème century, and was used as staff waiting room for the Swiss Guards until the Revolution. It was then strongly restored under Louis-Philippe, about 1835 (the parquet floor taking again the drawing of the ceiling), who married civilly there her son the duke of Orleans. Under Napoleon III, it was given great dinners and the ambassadors of king de Siam in 1861 were received there.
